Zizlau eightythree
Excursions to and interventions in an estate on the city’s edge from the 1930sLinz Stadt
| |
On the open fields on the edge of Linz, starting in 1932/1933, the Housing Estate St. Peter-Zizlau arose as one of the earliest examples of social welfare housing in Linz. The timber houses, each for two families, were built by the residents themselves. The building work and the use of the comparatively large gardens for breeding small animals and cultivating vegetables enabled residents without much capital or income to create residential space with the option of purchasing the houses later on. In the first phase from 1932 to 1933, 36 houses were built. Five years later, in 1938, the construction of the Hermann Göring Werke (today VOEST) was begun near the estate. A group of artists from around the Linz Art University has been occupied for some time with the few remainders, some of which are still occupied, of the first estate which today is situated in an urban fallow-land between warehouses, truck depots and VOEST factory buildings. One of the last decaying timber houses marked for demolition serves the artists as a support and starting-point for their activities. With sculptural interventions, guided tours, discussion events and documentary work, the location and its history will be given attention, perhaps for the last time, before it is finally converted over the next few years into parking lots and storage space. Straight from the centres of the historically more recent urban developments in Auwiesen and solarCity, the project leads festival visitors back to the beginnings of the history of housing estates in southern Linz.
