Miete, Strom, Gas
Text intervention on the facade of an apartment blockLinz Stadt Public intervention

The large facade work by Martin Strauß and Karl-Heinz Ströhle is an urgent reminder of the existential priorities of life in normality. Current developments in the economy and society have once again demonstrated how much exertion is necessary to secure the satisfaction of elementary needs when normal growth rates become doubtful. Formally, the artists orient themselves toward the textual works of avant-garde concept art and the now-popular use of facade surfaces for propaganda, education and economic agitation. The group of concepts, Miete, Strom, Gas (Rent, Electricity, Gas), adapted by the artists in colouring and typography to the architectural language of shared residential housing, leads us back to the basics of action by the welfare state, whose constructed artefacts dominate the south of Linz and provoke debate on the extent to which the securing of basic material needs still remains at the focus of social action.
